Flash... cards? I think I've heard of 'em, but...

Pieces of paper with a question on one side and the answer on the other, or something to that effect. Some of my students use them for memorising phrases and vocabulary by putting the French on one side and the English translation on the other.

Oh, I've gotcha! [Ringing bells now she describes the things, right.] So ya... look at one side, look at the other...

You try to avoid looking at the other side until you've come to an answer. 'aving a friend quiz you with the cards can also work as they are generally less likely to give the answer freely than you might yourself by peeking at the other side.
