What looks like a sword but won't hurt anyone?

It's important.

[Great description, Jack, very informative.

Since Saturday, Jack has been spotted a few times leaving his room to explore quiet places near the dorms, occasionally pocketing money and other random objects found on the floor or picking up oblong objects and testing them against walls. A few of them have caused cracks. Apparently his quest is getting stale enough to need help.

[...what. ......okay, so assuming Jack isn't just being eccentric, people have probably had all sorts of educational backgrounds before coming here, maybe this poor fellow never quite got much schooling for whatever reason.

Hell, it is America, after all.

...ah. ...well, yes, apo-... I'm sorry, that is, for the.. for speaking.. not so clearly. I meant to say... that it is nice to meet you. And that what you're looking for is.. most likely cheap, but I do not have... a good sense of what would count as 'cheap,' to you.

[He at least doesn't do the talking-more-loudly-when-talking-more-slowly thing that people always do.]

...mm. I'm afraid a half-dollar won't get very much...

[Okay, clearly he's a foreign student, but Alric would have expected he'd get more of an introduction at least to the exchange rate. ...then again exchange rates might not be much help for this fellow. Alric's still not quite sure how to speak to someone who seems to be a native speaker and isn't a small child, but can't handle big words, but he'll do his best to adapt, and to smile reassuringly.]

Well, for example, a bottle of water or juice or what-not might be a dollar... a sandwich, perhaps between five and ten. Probably less at a fast-food place, such as McDonalds, but I don't... really keep track of that sort of thing.

So a... toy sword that won't fall apart immediately... perhaps fifteen to twenty-five dollars, at a guess?

...mm. All right, well, four dollars would be quite a lot of potato chips, I believe, but I imagine firearms would be far more than twenty-five. I'm afraid you may simply need to adjust to different prices, here. The costs of things does often very quite a lot from one place to another.
