Am I the only one who thinks there is something seriously wrong here? I mean look around. This school is practically a movie set - big stately manor on beautiful grounds with all the facilities a school full of teenagers could want. And of course everyone's so nice and friendly and they just want to help us mutants learn to use and control our powers...

I mean do you all watch movies? It's like the perfect setup for a horror flick. One of those where they discover that the seemingly perfect location is just cover for some sort of mad scientist's twisted experiments. With us as the victims, not the heroes.

I'm sure some of you are going to think I'm overreacting. But I've got one question. This is supposedly a super-swank, upscale private school. Even without the whole mutant thing, it should be costing thousands of dollars to go here. So how come this little chica from the inner city of San Fran's here? 'Cause my folks sure as shit can't pay.

And don't say it's out of the goodness of their hearts. Ain't nobody actually works like that.

A pleasure, Miss Velma.

I know well--thankfully, for the most part, through others' tribulations--the misfortunes we can face. As I said, I certainly wouldn't suggest you throw caution to the wind. Only that you keep an open mind.

I'm confident you'd concede that the Institute is a mostly unusual place, if nothing else, yes? If so, I recommend that you take that into consideration, and weigh it against your expectations. Perhaps experience suggests catastrophe, but I for one have seen already that this place is... unlike what I've experienced, before.

I hope you'll find yourself pleasantly surprised, Miss Velma.

As you wish, of course.

To be perfectly honest, I can't make a direct comparison to other schools, myself. I learned exclusively from family and private tutors. So, to me, this place is special, because I can learn things I'd simply not have the opportunity to, elsewhere--and because I judge Professor Xavier to be a person of consummate intelligence, goodwill, and integrity. While I've not had a regular school experiences, I don't believe the same can be said for every school patron.

But I still believe we can be better, and that the Institute offers a unique opportunity to do so. Speaking for myself, I think it would be a shame to pass up even a chance at that opportunity simply to play it safe... but of course, I can speak only for myself.

Indeed? I confess, I'm surprised, but perhaps the schools here are far better than I'd been made to understand. If I'd known every school is like what I've seen here, but with greater freedoms, I'd surely have simply gone there and forgotten about the tutors entirely. Perhaps I begin to understand.

[He can certainly satisfy himself with even as small a retreat as that.]

An understandable concern. It's good to have a skeptical friend on hand. Keeps you grounded. Once again, though, I'll counsel keeping a corner, at least, of an open mind. If such generosity's as impossibly rare as you suggest, it would be a shame to miss it when it happens.

Apologies for the confusion, but, talk like what?

Oh. Sorry. But, yes, rather. I was raised for what most people would regard as formality, and... let's say I've found it a good habit to maintain.

Oh? Well, I am certainly sorry to give that impression. As I was raised, it's a preferable risk beside being inappropriately familiar or outright rude. Also, texting wasn't quite so much of a "thing," at home.

The understanding's appreciated, of course. I'll see what I can do, but old habits, and so on. It's not the first time I've noticed this peculiarity of American individualism, but I confess, I've yet to get the hang of it.
