I've been thinking a lot in the last few days about the people who've been getting sick in District X. Even if the symptoms don't seem too bad so far, it must be so terrible to know that the doctors don't know what's wrong yet...

There has to be something we can do for them, right? I thought maybe some kind of fundraiser -- we could sell something, or maybe do some kind of silent auction, or try and gather pledges from the community...

...It just seems like one piece of bad news after another, sometimes. I know we have counselors, and they're wonderful at what they do, but if anyone needs someone to talk to, just as a friend, I'm here. That's the least I can offer.

Cures need well funded medical research. Containing an epidemic needs extensive medical infrastructure. The flatscans won't give us either.

Stage some die-ins. We have enough people who can project illusions and clone themselves that it would be no risk to us. Also the image of disgusting some well-off index fossils that way is rich in schadenfreude.

That's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure if going right for shock value would be for the best. It seems like it could alienate more people than it brought in.

It's more likely to do that than you think. Watching someone die, knowing you could have prevented it, has a tendency to change your perspective. Not that we're likely to get much sympathy from them anyway...

Though it may be difficult to repeat the success of the "Ice bucket" challenge given the prejudices involved it may still be possible attract amass enough money to make progress.

There are wealthy mutants in the world and some 'flatscans' that care or at least have the foresight to realize that this pathogen could mutate and spread. Furthermore, the institute has med labs already, and we have powers that might make up for our lack of money."

Viti leaned closer into the camera. "The one question is, do you know how to get the money to where it needs to go?"

[Krista smiles a bit at that, listening to what he has to say.]

I don't know exactly, but I think that Professor Xavier and Miss Frost have both done a lot of philanthropic things in the past, so I was thinking I could ask them where it would be best put. If we should set up a charitable foundation, and how to do that, and things like that.

Viti nodded.

"I see. Well I found both Professor Xavier and Miss Frost to be hard to get a hold off, but if you see them please remind them that I have..." Viti looked into his mind as he paused.

"...abilities, that allow me to assist with the paper work. Also, I have a request."

Viti rubbed his chin and smiled.

"If Liir talks to you, please send him my way. You have my e-mail, and texting number."

And they're both very busy, but I think I should probably be able to contact them if I need to. I'm on the student council, and my roommate knows Miss Frost...

"Oh no. I just arrived at the institute this month. My parents contacted the Xavier institute, after I used my powers to successfully defend myself in court. But it looks like I missed a lot of big events by not coming here a couple of months sooner, I mean with all the repairs being done something big must have happened."

You could say that. Things... Well, things got a little bit out of hand a few weeks ago.

It's too bad I missed it all. If had been here, and had control of my powers, I could have been a real help.

Well for now all I can do is train, and train fast, so I'm ready for the next big event.

What do your powers do?

I can absorb verbal and numerical data from the universe. Not thoughts or feelings mind you, but concrete facts and numbers. For example I could know all facts about the empire state building at the snap of the fingers, when it was built, how it was built, the names of all the people who built it etc.

Well at least I could if I knew how to control my power. Right now it just absorbs facts at random with no particular pattern.

My brain just told me Gerald Shur, founder of the witness protection program, once talked a plastic surgeon into giving breast augmentation to a witness' wife.

Why on earth would my power tell me that? No one knows.

I'm not really sure when you'd need to know that...

But maybe you will someday! Maybe you'll think of it, and it will remind you of something important.

hmmmm, perhaps information on breast augmentation would be useful if I were fighting an opponent that controlled silicone...

The fundraiser sounds like a good idea.

Someone was suggesting doing a "challenge" like they did for ALS a few years ago. Or I'd been thinking that maybe a silent auction or some kind of ticketed event might be good, too... What do you think?

I think they meant less in the specifics and more in the idea of "challenging" people to get them more involved, probably.

What sort of challenge did you have in mind?

The idea with the ice was to have it be something people would want to avoid, so they'd choose to pay for the donation instead, right? Maybe something harmless but embarrassing might be good. A dance or something?

I'm still thinking about the details.

A dance would definitely be embarrassing.

I don't really know very many dances, though... We can brainstorm it more. Something silly, or something messy, maybe. Something that's a little uncomfortable, but won't get anyone hurt.
