[I don't belong here. Just give them what they want. Maybe, she realizes, it's that he sounds too much like the side of her no one knows, and she somehow hates the thought of someone who seemed so strong reduced to that. Hates the thought of anyone feeling that unwanted.]

[He thinks about this for a second. Staying here and continuing to speak his mind is his way of standing up for himself and his right to have his own opinions, no matter what the others thing. He'd figured that the prom was something frivolous, like the clubs, something he could stay out of and let them have, without him. Just in the interests of peace.

But he does have a couple friends here... He could say hi to them, at least. However, he doesn't know Krista that well, and he's a little he's wary of her motives. Why would she care? He doesn't want anyone to feel sorry for him. He doesn't need anyone's approval.]

I don't need anyone to look after me. I can take care of myself.
