[This is a weird one. People have definitely seen this girl around campus, for sure, but you ever get the impression there's just something... off? About her whole existence? Like she's not really there, just in your head? It doesn't help that the 'room' she's broadcasting from doesn't seem to exist in the whole campus...]

So I've been watching a lot of news lately... it was hard to watch news when I was with John, because he never really let us watch TV, and...

I have to admit, I'm afraid. I'm not really afraid of registering, I mean... Pretty much anyone can tell I'm a mutant. I can't really go out in public like normal people do. [But she looks normal? Weird feelings when you look at her too long aside.] But it's kind of about this Mutant Liberation Front and, you know... like... Ugh, this is hard to put into words.

What would happen if that war everyone's worried about happening won't be between the US and Genosha but... more like a civil war right here? Between mutants and humans.

[It's starting to feel more and more real every day.]

Then again that'd happen if there was a war between Genosha and the US. Or if the Brotherhood shows up again. Taco Tuesday...

I... did notice something of a trend overlooking the records. Going back nearly three decades, this place has been attacked at least once every couple of years. It sort of makes sense, given who we are and what we represent. And the idea that kids supposedly make "easy targets"...

But you'd think that the fact it's always rebuilt, always bounces back, and no one's ever "succeeded", people wouldn't try anymore.

Only every couple of years... seems like it was more than that when I was first here.

They hit here because if we learn how to use our powers they don't know how to stop us. Between me and telepaths most politician hates the idea someone can just hear the things they don't want the people to know. Same goes for anyone else with shady dealings, and a handful of superpowered individuals can do the same damage as a small army.

Its why, even if we bounce back, they will keep hoping to get lucky and see one of us go nuts and kill a ton of people.

That just sounds crazy, but I guess you'd have to be.

It isn't crazy, well... okay, trying to kill us over and over is. But they're scared, scared people do stupid things.

And... I can't be sure if I were human, and I met someone with my powers I wouldn't freaked out. Worried about every little thing I say from then on.

What are your powers? Out of curiosity, I mean.

I... hear stuff. Not with my ears, just, soundwaves. I know where they are, how they sound, where they aren't. Like some super bat sonar thing. I can also manipulate and change them as I need to.

...Notice when they don't bounce off of people walking around the school...

[There's a small laugh on Martha's end, at least.] Even without using my own powers, I get the impression that's directed at me.

I don't say this without prompting but what you're talking to, interacting with right now? Is just a projection I've put into your mind.

It isn't something most people think about.

Huh. You can do that over the network?

Well, sort of. So long as the person using the computer has any kind of audio/visual link with me, I can project the image onto the webcam or the voice onto the mic, and you'll see the results. It's a cross between psychic projection and really subtle telekinetic manipulation of small wavebands. Kind of like what you do, but way way less refined. Thankfully, since I don't have any other, uh... well distractions for my mind, I've gotten pretty used to it.

Okay... I was wondering cause you don't sound like a telepath in my head, they usually give me a headache. If you're using the soundwaves that'd explain it. It's the disconnect that does it, the one sense telling me something different from the other.

It just means if we talk, um, face to face... will you have a speaker to manipulate?

In that case, I can tap into the part of your brain that processes audio placement. I can make it seem like a sound is coming from any source, even if it's not. That part, thankfully, isn't hard linked to anything that processes thought or memory, so I won't get interference from someone's brain activity.

Well that's a Cold Read if I ever heard one. The school gets attacked when there's a stiff breeze, apparently.

Either by someone trying to kill us, or someone trying to garner favor for mutants by making sure the news is full of dead mutant children in time for dinner.
